New figures beat expectations, SMMT says

Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have stated that new 62 plate vehicles have sold well last month.

An increase of 8.2% up on the same month last year . This is a rise of 26,000 more cars than the SMMT had been expecting. Behind March, September is the second busiest month for sales.

"The strength of private car sales in September may be a sign that consumers are becoming a bit more prepared - and able - to spend as they are helped by rising employment and a halving in consumer price inflation from the September 2011 peak level of 5.2%," said Howard Archer, chief UK economist at IHS Global Insight....more

Sales increase for first time in almost 14 months

UK cars have risen for the first time in more than a year, mainly due to increasingly green and cost-conscious customers purchasing smaller vehicles – although many experts warned the industry could be in for a rough ride.

Purchases in the so-called mini segment – the smallest category of vehicle that includes the Vauxhall Agila and the Toyota IQ – jumped by 34.5 per cent last month. The "supermini" segment, the next size up, which includes the Ford Fiesta and the Fiat 500, sold 17.6 per cent more cars in the period.

"“A lot of this is down to the fact that the smaller cars are offering bigger comforts, such as satnavs and leather seats. And they use less petrol, are more environmentally friendly and have lower road tax, a lot of which is geared around CO2 emissions.."...more

The first of British Gas’ new fully electric and solar powered cars were unveiled today by the Secretary of State for Transport, Philip Hammond MP.

Electric cars are expected to become commonplace on British roads. By 2020 experts predict that electric vehicles could account for approximately 10 percent of all sales. That could amount to roughly 325,000 sold in the UK each year. This will add up to roughly five percent of all cars with 1.5 million electric cars on Britain’s roads by 2020.

“A low carbon future is the only viable future for transport. But we must acknowledge that it is carbon, not the car, which is the problem"...more

UK's first mass-produced electric vehicle hits dealerships

The Nissan Leaf is a superb electric family vehicle with the performance of a Ford Focus but with only a fraction of the greenhouse gas emissions. It is being delivered to UK dealerships as of today.

The Leaf is, at £30,990, at the expensive end of the family budget, The good thing is drivers can claim a £5,000 government grant towards the cost. They are also exempt from congestion and road tax charges.
